Thank You All Who Have Signed-Up!

Hello Everyone,

I wanted to thank you all for volunteering for this event. We really want this to be a great opportunity for everyone to share what they love with their community and as well a great way to show those less fortunate in our community that they are worth something, especially in this trying time. The only way we can keep ourselves up is by giving each other support. You are really making a difference in somebody’s life, including yours, by being part of this event.

First off, I wanted to inform you of the dates of the events:

Dress for Success – Fort Myers will be December 3rd
Cafe of Life – Bonita Springs will be December 10th
Nations Association – Fort Myers will be December 10th.

We also wanted to make it aware that participation for more than one event is welcomed!

Portrait Photographers
I wanted to narrow down what kind of setups can be done in each location.

  • Bonita Springs event is outside at Depot Park. So ambient lighting photographers, or photographers who have portable setups (i.e. speedlights, shoot thru umbrellas, or battery packs) this would be the place for you. The Bonita event is small, we’re expecting close to around 60 families. The event is scheduled to been in the afternoon. If you’re interested in Bonita, please contact Megan Taylor at meganmarietaylor@gmail.com
  • Fort Myers – Dress for Success we are working on booking a location within Bell Tower Shops or the Crown Royal Plaza. This will be more studio shooting. We will be giving headshots, as well as family portraits to any of the ladies that do bring their family. We’re expecting anywhere from possibly 60 – 150 individuals (not including families). The setup will probably me something like half headshot photographers – half family portrait photographers. I don’t see any problems with using speedlights shoot thru for any of the headshots, so some of our speedlight photographers, if you possess lightstands and umbrellas, you can do this for sure. I know some photographers spoke of having some extra backdrops, and I also have quite a few rolls of seamless paper we can share around. Anyone interested in Fort Myers, can contact me, Melissa, at melissa@helpportrait-swfl.com.
  • Nations Association is a mixed area. Outside and inside portraits can be done. So everyone can participate in this whether you’re ambient or studio. We will have two buildings that mini studios can be setup in. One building for sure can house 4 studio setups and the other maybe 2-3. Nations is expecting anywhere from 75-150 familes. For Nations, please contact Natalie Everett at natalie@helpportrait-swfl.com.

I also wanted to make sure that you all portrait photographers are aware of the rules for this event.

1. These photos can NOT be used for your portfolio.  But we can share photos with the subjects story ONLY if permission is granted by the subject. Releases will be available. Stories can be shared here, on your personal blog, the official Help-Portrait site, etc as long as it abides by release rules (don’t portray the subject in a bad light, and remember these photos are to create a sense of worth so be careful with how you present them). You can find out more here: http://help-portrait.com/2011/10/the-future-of-help-portrait-2

2. We are not here to try and one up anyone else. This is an event about bringing our community together.

3. Yes, this event is open to all photographers of any level. But yes, we would appreciate it be photographers who can capture those smiling photos of a family and make them feel special. This isn’t about gear, or technically amazing photographs. This is about making people feel like they are worth something. These are individuals who may have never even have had a picture of themselves taken or even seen a picture of themselves before.

4. Most importantly, have fun!

Documenters

We need two documenters per site. Please check with event leaders for each event if you haven’t already.

Volunteers/Photo Assistants/Greeters

Regular volunteers your jobs are just as important as the photographers. You will be the glue that keeps the events together. You will spend slightly more time with our families and individuals, making sure they are where they are supposed to be, helping guide them, helping our photographers with any assistance they need (whether it be help posing the family, holding reflectors, moving lights, or translating for some of the non-English speaking families), and just making sure any issue that may arise is being attended to and aware to the group leader.

At our Nations location, having bilingual volunteers were essential as a lot of our families spoke only Spanish. Our Bonita location will probably be the same. This goes out to anyone actually looking to get involved; photographer, volunteer, make-up artists; etc.

Make-Up Artists/Hairstylists

We’ve had only one make-up artists sign-up. We have contacted some of the schools in the area and are still waiting on replies. So if you know anyone, please let them know about this event. We’re not looking for extreme make-overs. Simple make-up and hair, maybe a little clean up of the face, as some of the individuals that we will be photographing may have not had a bath (especially Nations and Bonita locations). We want to make these folks feel special. So please, please, please, let anyone you know who thinks they can be of some service in this area know that we are in need of them. Even if it’s donations of excess make-up that someone may have, make-up applicators, hair brushes, and combs. Anything helps.

Printing

Printing is going to be individual to the area you are working within. We are working on possibly doing on-site printing at Nations and Dress for Success. So if you guys have printers, please let us know. If we feel like it’s a possibility, we will further look for ink cartridge and photo paper donations. With that we will be needing individuals who will be in charge of the printing area and packaging the photos, and making sure they get either to the photographer who photographed the family, so you both can present it to the family or individual. We’re looking to do one 8×10 main family shots, and possibly four 5×7 individuals. At Dress for Success event, we will probably be doing 5×8 or 6×9 headshots and 8×10 family shots.

For Everyone

T-shirts. If you were part of Help-Portrait last year, you can use your t-shirts again. But we are asking that everyone head over to http://help-portrait.rede-commerce.com/ and buy one of the shirts. If anyone has any issues, or can’t buy one, please email your group leader, or you can email me at melissa@helpportrait-swfl.com and we’ll figure something out. But we’re really hoping that everyone can pick up their own shirts. Shirts from last year are on sale for $10. Please check it out.

Donations

We have been setup on Donor Tools as an official site! So if anyone asks about making donations (they are tax deductible) please direct them to our donation page .

Donations work as a reimbursement. We get people to donate, we buy all the materials we need depending on how much we have in donations, and afterwards we send in a reimbursement letter with all receipts pertaining to things bought for the event (i.e. food, drinks, photo paper, printer ink, printers, etc.). This does not include you buying photo equipment. PLEASE KEEP ALL YOUR RECEIPTS PERTAINING TO HELP-PORTRAIT MATERIALS.

Really want to thank you again for signing up for this event and wanting to make a difference in your community.

Anyone still interested, please sign-up and get in touch with the event leaders.

Meet Our Organizations

December 3rd is approaching fast. Our locations have finalized the organizations that they will be working with to give back this season.

Bonita Springs will be working with the Café of Life organization. Café of Life assists in meeting the needs of the less fortunate people of Bonita Springs, Florida, providing nutritional and supplemental assistance while preserving the dignity of their clients. They are an agency of the United Way of Lee County. Café of Life serves lunch to anyone who visits their location Monday thru Friday. They serve anywhere from 80 to 120 people a day, and in 2009 served 30,357 meals. In addition, Café of Life also provides supplemental groceries, blankets, clothing, miscellaneous personal goods, and sometimes furniture and appliances to clients. They also supply transportation to medical appointments and job interviews.

You can visit their website at www.cafeoflife.org

The Fort Myers team will be working with the Dress For Success of SW Florida. Dress For Success promotes the independence of disadvantaged women by providing professional attire, a network of support and the career development tools to help women thrive in work and in life. Founded in New York City in 1997, Dress for Success is an international not-for-profit organization offering services designed to help their clients find jobs and remain employed. Each Dress for Success client receives one suit when she has a job interview and can return for a second suit or separates when she finds work. Since 1997, Dress for Success has served more than 550,000 women around the world. Each year they reach more than 50,000 women in the United States, Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Australia, the Netherlands, Mexico, Poland and the West Indies. Dress for Success may be best known for providing suits to women, it is their employment retention programs that are the cornerstone of the organization. Soon after Dress for Success was founded they came to recognize that finding work is only one step in a woman’s journey towards economic independence; remaining employed and building a rewarding career are essential if a woman is to become self-sufficient. To meet the need for services that would help women both find and keep jobs, they established the Professional Women’s Group (PWG) program, which offers women ongoing support as they successfully transition into the workforce, build thriving careers and prosper in the mainstream workplace. Once a woman joins the PWG she is a member for life, able to attend meetings at any affiliate throughout the world, and can benefit from additional employment retention and mentoring programs. Dress for Success also has developed Career Center, an initiative that promotes confidence and professionalism by providing women career guidance, the chance to acquire technology skills and assistance in their job searches.

You can visit Dress for Success SW Florida’s website at www.dressforsuccess/swflorida

Also, we will be working Nations Association Charities again this year. They are the first organization we worked with upon starting the SWFL Help-Portrait group, and we are excited to be working with them again. Nations Associations Charities provides assistance to families and individuals in greatest need in our community to insure their day-to-day survival, help them become self-sufficient and provide a wide range of services to fill a “gap” which would otherwise exist. This includes programs specifically tailored for heads of households (to help to provide for the needs of their families), constructive recreation and mentoring programs for youths (to redirect their energies, inspire and educate them) as well as programs to provide for the needs of children. The Association also provides needs-challenged individuals with information about other community resources and activities.

You can visit Nations Associations Charities website at www.nationsassociations.org

Please visit the volunteer page to sign up if you’re interested in getting involved with the event this year.

Because you know, in the end – it’s not about you, it’s about them.

A Help Portrait Testimonial by Anna Nguyen
2010 Help Portrait Photographer for Fort Myers, FL and 2011 Naples Event Leader/Photographer

Yesterday was December 4, 2010. December 4 is an important date to many all over the world. And no it’s not because it was the anniversary of D-day, but rather a photographic achievement.
Yesterday, I helped in a world-wide movement to give the gift of photos to people in need all over the world, yesterday was Help-Portrait 2010.

I first found out about Help-Portrait through facebook. I was on my newsfeed when I saw that one of second shooters “liked” a new page. Curious, I checked it out and was blown away that I finally found something I could do to make a difference in someone’s life. The concept was simple: find someone in need, take their picture, print their picture, and give it to them. I was hooked almost immediately.

Yesterday was so successful. It was the first time Help-Portrait came to Fort Myers and we were only able to service about 120 families – I shot 7 total yesterday. The whole preparation was chaotic. We were short photographers, we were short make-up artists, we didn’t have families signed up, the weather wasn’t cooperating. It assistants didn’t show up, families were running late. Photographers just started shooting. But you know what? It was all worth it – and I’d do it all over again.

An on-going joke throughout the day was when I had one family of 7 where only their oldest daughter spoke English. I had taken 3 years of Spanish, but you know, I didn’t practice it much and I was SUPER rusty, but I managed to make light of it and we all spoke a combination of Spanlish. For one big family photo I say “Now, dias queso en ingles!” EVERYONE, and I mean EVERYONE in earshot laughed. I have a tendency to get louder the more excited I get, so I was not a quiet person telling my clients to say “Queso” and “Cheese”. So it was a huge deal to the other photographers to tell their clients to say “Queso” for their photos. I had such a great time and everyone there was so helpful.

Alvaro and I shared a backdrop and created two highly efficient stations – we shared an assistant. Mike used continuous light and Matt had his setup up and running smoothly enough. Everyone else made beautiful photos outdoors. I bribed my kids with chocolate to get them to cooperate with me and they were all wonderful.

The families that were given to me, thank you. Thank you so much for the smiles, the stories, some of the best posing and creativity demands you gave me that day. Try posing a 11 person family in an 7ft space. ;) You guys, you were my clients that day, I hope I was satisfactory to you and that you love and cherish all the photos.

Yesterday was a great reminder of why I am a photographer and it reaffirmed my philosophy with my business. It’s not about the money, the fame, the recognition – it’s about the client. I mean, the money, the recognition, the fame the everything that comes with being a great photographer is awesome and well wanted – but it doesn’t offer me the ultimate happiness, it doesn’t make me want to wake up in the morning for. I shoot for my client – I shoot for that smile and the happiness that my client exhibits when they see their photos. I shoot for the “These are amazing, these are beautiful, thank you so much!” smiles and hugs.

Because you know, in the end – it’s not about you, it’s about them.

THANK you HELP-PORTRAIT, HELP-PORTAIT Ft. Myers, Nations Charities Association, the Drug Stop Team, and the photographers, make-up artists, videographers, sponsors, and other volunteers for all the smiles, the new friendships, the lessons learned and experience earned yesterday – you guys are the ones who are AMAZING.

“Help Portrait is this movement that builds long lasting memories and bonds”

A Help Portrait Testimonial by Lisa Marie Pullicino
2010 Help Portrait Photographer for Fort Myers, FL

If I could ever say that in my life there was one main event that made me feel like I was actually doing something beneficial for other people, it would most definitely be Help Portrait. In the very beginning it started out with Natalie, Melissa and I sitting in a local Star Bucks discussing these huge ideas and laughing hysterically because we were so incredibly stressed we really didn’t know what else to do. These ideas of following through and creating a Help Portrait in Fort Myers were not only overwhelming, but it almost seemed impossible at the very beginning. The three of us started getting the word out there and soon enough we had a huge team of photographers and volunteers, Nations (an amazing non-profit organization willing to help us), and an incredible amount of families who were signing up for portraits.

The day of Help Portrait I experienced so many different emotions. I wanted to capture absolutely everything on film and decided to bring along my video camera to document what I saw as a photographer throughout the day. If I wasn’t filming, I was shooting. I, like a few others, ended up working for about 8 hours or more that day. The families I shot were absolutely beautiful no matter the clothes they were wearing. Throughout the day, there were two major portrait sessions that stick out in my head. One being this beautiful baby girl. She was only a few months old and I was on the ground shooting her and making her laugh, and as I looked back her grandmother had tears in her eyes as I shot her. It was a great feeling to know that this meant so much to her family. The second portrait session that stands out in my mind was at the end of the night when everyone was tearing down, the volunteers had gone home and all photographers left except for myself, Natalie and Alvaro. We had a great teenage volunteer who had been helping us all day that realized because she had been so busy, she forget to get her Senior Portraits done. Once she realized this, she became extremely upset and began crying because she wouldn’t have any other opportunity to get them done because of money. She ended up walking out with her friend and the three of us decided to re-setup a studio and give her the Senior Portrait session that she deserved. I went outside to find her and explained to her that she needed to stop crying because she was going to be the star and she needed to go get dolled up. We ended up shooting her for maybe an hour or so and her photos turned out absolutely gorgeous. She was so excited and so happy and was glowing in her photographs….it was literally one of the most fulfilling experiences ever and it actually brought me to tears on the way home as well.

Help Portrait is this movement that not only gives free studio-quality portraits to those who normally would never have the opportunity, but, it builds these long lasting memories and bonds. I can not wait to be involved with Help Portrait again this year and even in the years to come.
